Hearts

The goal of this classic card game of Hearts is to keep your score low by picking up the least amount of heart suited cards. Pass unwanted cards to win tricks. When it comes to free card games, think Hearts. Shoot for the moon!

Hearts Objective
The object of Hearts is to have the fewest points at the end of the game.

Broken Hearts
Hearts are broken when someone plays a heart or the Queen of Spades in this classic card game.

Shooting the Moon
Shooting the Moon is a special strategy in which a player tries to take all 13 Hearts and the Queen of Spades. Shoot the Moon and add points to other's score or subtract from your own.

Shooting the Sun
Shooting the Sun is even more difficult than Shooting the Moon. Take every card in the deck and add points to other's score or subtract from your own.

Passing Cards in Hearts
At the start of each round in this card game, each player is dealt 13 cards. When you receive your cards, you must get rid of 3 cards by passing them to an opponent.

Select three cards to pass by clicking on them, and then click on "Pass cards." The computer will pass them to the appropriate player. Once you have passed your cards, the cards that have been passed to you become visible as soon as your opponent passes them. You must pass cards before you receive cards passed to you.

2 of Clubs Leads the Round
Once the passing round is complete, the player who is holding the 2 of Clubs will find it highlighted in his or her hand. Play begins when this player double-clicks on this card to lead it. To lead is to be the first person to play a card on a trick.

Following Suit
Card game play continues clockwise. Each player, in turn, is prompted to play a card. Each person must follow suit - that is, play a card in the suit that was led, if possible. If you can't follow suit, you may play any card.

When it is your turn, the computer highlights all cards that you may play and allows you to play only one of these cards.

Subsequent Tricks in Hearts
The player who wins each trick leads the next trick, double-clicking on a card to play it.

Play continues clockwise, each player following suit if possible, with the winner of each trick taking it and leading the next, until all 13 tricks have been played. The computer then calculates the number of points each player has taken and displays the score.

Here are some additional pointers designed to help you become a more advanced Hearts player.

Handling the Queen:
In this card game, if you are dealt the Queen of Spades, a question you need to ask yourself is, "Do I want to pass her or hold her?" This will depend on whether you are holding enough additional Spades to protect her - that is, to play on the tricks that will inevitably be led in Spades as the game unfolds. Count how many other Spades you are holding. If this number is less than 3 you should probably pass the Queen.

Handling High Cards:
When you have a particularly bad hand one strategy is to play or even lead with a high card on the first or even second trick in which that suit is led. You have a better chance of taking a trick without points the first time a suit is led than later since, in most cases, more (if not all) of your opponents will be forced to follow suit. Watch out, though: You already know that there is an advantage to voiding in a suit, and the player holding the queen may have done so and be lying in wait.

Passing Strategies:
  • In 3 out of 4 hands, you have the chance to pass 3 cards you don't like.
  • Pass the Queen of Spades if you don't have many Spades.
  • Pass the Ace and/or the King of Spades if you don't have many Spades and you aren't holding the Queen.
  • Don't pass low Spades (2 to Jack).
  • Pass cards so as to void a suit, if possible.
  • Pass high cards, if possible.
  • Pass low Hearts to prevent an opponent from Shooting the Moon.

Shooting the Moon:
The first thing to notice is whether you have low Hearts. In this card game, it is nearly impossible to Shoot the Moon if you are holding a low Heart, since you will almost certainly lose this Heart to another player. This is why, for both offensive and defensive reasons, good players tend to pass at least one low Heart.

For Shooting the Moon, the best setup in your Hearts suit is an unbroken string of Hearts from the Ace on down - the further down, the better. The next best - and usually more attainable - is no Hearts at all.

Hi,

I really enjoy earning badges and also trying to complete albumns. It's a bit disappointing in that some albumns I only need one more challenge but can't seem to achieve it after months of trying. One challenge is shoot the moon in Hearts. I enjoy playing against robots - no drama, etc - just playing the game. Is there anyway to achieve shooting the moon against the robots that I don't know about? I'm all for earning the the challenge win but it seems impossible to earn this one against the robots.

Thanks!

As far as I know, Safari no longer supports Java. You would need to download and install a browser that supports Java if you want to play the Java games. You can still use Safari for the Flash games.

It isn't as easy as switching the game from Java to Flash or HTML5. Basically, to convert a game to a new programming language, developers need to re-write the entire game and then make certain that all of the challenges work with that new coding. It also remains to be seen as to what language Pogo would choose - Flash is next in the line of browser-dropping fire and HTML5 isn't the solution everyone had hoped. I'm afraid we're going to wait a while to see this one brought into a new format, but the good news is you can still play it with IE browser.

Plug ins are rapidly being eliminated, I am aware, but that does not mean pogo can not change it from hearts, I would think

Hearts cannot load with Microsoft Edge because Edge does not support Java.

See the article below about Windows 10:

Windows 10 and Pogo

For card games:

Your browser's zoom must be set at exactly 100 percent.

While you are on Pogo's home page, hold down the CTRL key and press the Zero key (above the letter P on your keyboard) at the same time. That will reset your zoom to 100 percent.

Do that BEFORE you go to the game.

Some people have found that lowering their zoom to 90 percent or 80 percent helps.

Just make sure your zoom is not higher than 100 percent.

That problem is unique to Internet Explorer. Doesn't matter which version. That is one of the reasons I do not use it. And, it's not just with Pogo. I've had it happen on other website. (not game site).

Here is other suggestions:
Open Internet Options and on the Advanced Tab, click on RESET. Apply and close IE11.
Now, when you open it again, you will get a pop up windows asking your whether you want to use the Recommended Settings or Custom Settings, Click the Custom Settings. This will disable all the redundant settings.
Try playing Hearts and see if you have better results.
