Checkmate Your Opponent
The object of this board game is to checkmate your opponent by positioning your pieces so that your opponent's king is immobilized or captured. When it's your turn, you may move your pieces in two different ways:
  • Move a piece to an unoccupied square
  • Move a piece to a square occupied by an opponent's piece, capturing that piece and removing it from the board.

Play Against the Computer
The ability of a Computer player varies by the rating of the room you're in. Beginning players should play in Beginner or Social rooms to use the easiest computer opponents. To play against the computer: click a room, find an empty table, and click 'Play'.

Chess Preferences
The "Preferences" button at the bottom of the game table brings up three options.
  • Highlight Last Move Made
  • Highlight Potential Moves
  • Display Animations
You'll also find information about Move History and Files and Ranks.

Ending the Game
An online board game of Chess always ends either with a win for one player or a draw. You win either when you checkmate your opponent's king or when your opponent resigns.

If you have a powerful computer and a fast Internet connection, it may seem that your opponent is getting extra time to make his or her moves. Actually, what's probably happening is that your opponent has a slower computer or slower Net connection, and thus your clock is starting up sooner to compensate or the delay. No, the other player isn't getting an advantage (because he or she won't be able to see your last move any faster), our system is just leveling the playing field. In the end, you'll both have the same amount of time to make your moves.

A pre-set number of seconds are added to your chess clock after you make your move. This is to compensate for a prolonged game - even if you have no time left on your normal chess clock, you'll still have this "bonus" time to make a move. The default number of seconds is 3, but can be adjusted anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds.

Chess • UPDATE: Attention - Solitaire Gardens & Mahjong Escape

By Pogo_Llama » October 17th, 2017, 3:38 pm

Hello Pogo Community,

Yesterday Pogo experienced some issues with Solitaire Gardens and Mahjong Escape. To be safe, we temporarily disabled both games so we could thoroughly investigate - and the issue was found and the team is now working on a solution. The games will remain offline for a bit longer so please keep watching the Pogo Blog for more updates.

Thanks again for your patience.

I'm having the same issue. For some reason, when I play Aces High I get the sound through my wireless headphones, but not for any other game. And it's strictly Pogo, all other websites are fine.

I was able to play just now without any problems.

Check your settings again.
Under "Customize Your Table" make sure there isn't a checkmark next to "Make Game Rated."

You could also try using a browser other than the one you normally use to see if you have better results.

Are you trying to play a RATED game?

RATED games have to be played with other people; you cannot play RATED games with the robot opponent.

The mute button isn't muted. I don't understand, I can hear ads on another account, but the game sounds come through my cpu (inside my tower), but not through my headphones. Very weird and confusing and I need the sound to play.

Chess • Attention - Chrome 59

By Pogo_Llama » June 30th, 2017, 9:08 pm

Hello Pogo community,

The most recent update to the Google Chrome browser to Chrome 59 has resulted in loading errors for many of Pogo games, specifically table games where you can play vs. a bot or a person.

We are aware of this issue and are working on a fix to it. During this time, we ask that you play those specific games on a different browser such as Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer.

Thank you and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

This issue is happening for some players in some of the games.

The problem has been reported and the technicians will be troubleshooting the issue.

You can still play the game by clicking "Play People" or "Play Robots."

You can also play by typing the room name into the "Find A Game Room" box located above the Chat Room list.

Chess • Chess Rooms Won't Open

By hotLizzyann312 » June 23rd, 2017, 4:20 pm

Hi, I have been playing chess on pogo for years. 3 days ago I was unable to open any individual rooms (i.e. azure, baby blue). I have check java, flash is up to date and the pop up blocker is off. I don't know what else to do as the individual rooms will still not open. Any advice ?

Chess • Update - Attention: Flash Update Issue

By Pogo_Llama » June 14th, 2017, 6:50 pm

As of 2 PM PT, June 16, Mahjong Escape and Undiscovered World should now be fixed. If you're still experiencing issues with these games, you may need to clear your cache and your Flash cache. (Make sure to un-check preserve Favorited sites option).

Thank you.

Hello Pogo community,

Flash sent out an update overnight and this has since created issues on certain Pogo games. The Pogo team is currently investigating which specific Pogo games this is affecting and contacting the developer's to fix these issues. The team is aware of this and working to fix this as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding. I will update here as information becomes available.

Thank you,
