Checkmate Your Opponent
The object of this board game is to checkmate your opponent by positioning your pieces so that your opponent's king is immobilized or captured. When it's your turn, you may move your pieces in two different ways:
  • Move a piece to an unoccupied square
  • Move a piece to a square occupied by an opponent's piece, capturing that piece and removing it from the board.

Play Against the Computer
The ability of a Computer player varies by the rating of the room you're in. Beginning players should play in Beginner or Social rooms to use the easiest computer opponents. To play against the computer: click a room, find an empty table, and click 'Play'.

Chess Preferences
The "Preferences" button at the bottom of the game table brings up three options.
  • Highlight Last Move Made
  • Highlight Potential Moves
  • Display Animations
You'll also find information about Move History and Files and Ranks.

Ending the Game
An online board game of Chess always ends either with a win for one player or a draw. You win either when you checkmate your opponent's king or when your opponent resigns.

If you have a powerful computer and a fast Internet connection, it may seem that your opponent is getting extra time to make his or her moves. Actually, what's probably happening is that your opponent has a slower computer or slower Net connection, and thus your clock is starting up sooner to compensate or the delay. No, the other player isn't getting an advantage (because he or she won't be able to see your last move any faster), our system is just leveling the playing field. In the end, you'll both have the same amount of time to make your moves.

A pre-set number of seconds are added to your chess clock after you make your move. This is to compensate for a prolonged game - even if you have no time left on your normal chess clock, you'll still have this "bonus" time to make a move. The default number of seconds is 3, but can be adjusted anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds.

It is against Forum rules to post the screen name of another player in an accusatory manner. We have no way of looking into those accusations. I've removed the names.

You must use the in game Abuse Report to report the player. Pogo will get a snippet of the chat and will take action if the Terms Of Service were violated. They will not inform you of action taken (if any).

Muting the player, setting up your own table and playing with people you know, and even playing in a different room will help.

As for children, children should not be playing on Pogo, but the parent can set up the games to not allow chat at all.
While in a game, look above the Who's Here List. Under Main Chat are four little icons. Click on the third icon from the left and remove the checkmark next to "Show Chat."

Pogo should make an effort to clean up main chess chat someone with names such as {removed by moderator}. It is no use trying to mute him he simply exits as soon as he comments then comes back with another identity. This problem has been reported for at least 3 years. There are children here. Can Pogo fix this or are you not able to?

Make sure that your browser's zoom is set at exactly 100 percent.
While you are on your homepage, hold down the CTRL key and press the Zero key (above the P on your keyboard) at the same time.
That will reset your zoom.
See if that helps.

To whom it may concern, I need some help in resolving the problem of my chess pieces being immovable upon the start of a game. Everything loads fine, but then my chess pieces will not move.

You're welcome. Since you said you were playing the bots, I didn't even think about telling you to make sure it wasn't a rated game. Glad you figured it out.

That was not only a suggestion, it was exactly what you need to do to adjust the timer.
I just tried with both a Club and a Free account and it worked for both.

When you are in the Chess page, scroll down and select the tab Chat rooms.
Pick any Room. When it the room opens look for an emtpy table, click Play and wait a few seconds until a pop up opens where you can customize your table.
Very first option is to set your timer "Use chess clock"
Check the option if you want a timed game, uncheck it for untimed games
If you pick Timed games you can select the time from 1 minute up to 60 minutes.

Once you have selected your own options click Play, a game will open and then all you have to do is click Start Game and a robot will join.
Be aware that if you pick rated games you can't play a robot, you have to play a real person.
